There is no doubt that burglar alarm systems are a worthwhile investment in the protection of your home and family. Studies reveal that it is far less likely that you will become the victim of a burglary at home if you have a correctly fitted and well maintained burglar alarm system. There are many different types of burglar alarm systems available for domestic and business use but they can be broadly categorized into two main groups: bells only alarm systems and monitored alarm systems.

Bells only alarm system is a basic burglar alarm which triggers an audible external or internal siren when someone is trying to enter your home. It can be hard wired or wireless but is not monitored for a police response. When there is an alarm, you can be notified directly; then make the decision of whether to call the police or not.

Monitored alarm system is an effective means of bringing a response to home monitored alarm activation. The system passes information to a 24hour alarm receiving centre, who responds to the signal in accordance with agreed police policy and your personal requirements.

Both of these two alarm systems are effective ways to protect you houses. However, nowadays when many houses have alarm systems fitted the general public may choose to ignore the warnings bells. How many times have you heard a burglar alarm going off and how many times have you taken some action about it? Many cheaper systems result in numerous false alarms and the public to some extent have become immune to the sound of a continuous alarm. In addition, if the resident is at home when the alarm sounds, it might scare off the invaders but also scares the resident. Is someone trying to break in? Should you call police? In some cases police departments have demoted a priority response to alarms because of logistics problems created by the increase in home security systems and false alarms.

While using a monitored alarm system, any alarm activation is passed to a central monitoring station by your telephone. These alarm receiving centers, or ARCs, are thus alerted to any potential burglary. They can "watch" the alarm system and if they see two or more different units activated, they can inform the police that a confirmed incident is taking place. If you are not at home and the alarm is triggered, security personnel will be immediately dispatched to check on your property. Should security discover a crime underway, police will be called on the spot, possibly preventing a robbery that might not only save your valuables but the lives of your pets. In the unlikely event you are at home and under assault, there is the priceless comfort of knowing help will be forthcoming in mere minutes without your having to take action.

If you are thinking about the installation of an alarm system in your home it is worth taking into account that the police response to alarm activations varies according to the type of alarm system installed.
